The Mk2 Megane RS put Renault Sport on the map as a serious performance brand. The standard 225 offered 225bhp from a turbocharged 2.0-litre four-cylinder. The R26 pushed that to 230bhp with chassis revisions. The R26.R is the stripped-out track weapon, with only 450 made worldwide, and held the front-wheel drive Nurburgring lap record in its era.

5 Things to Know Before You Buy
1
Timing Belt and Dephaser Pulley
Critical £400 - £800 Every 72k miles / 5 years

The F4Rt engine shares the same timing belt and dephaser pulley setup as the Clio 172/182. The rules are identical: belt failure destroys the engine, and the dephaser pulley can fail and take the belt with it. The turbocharged engine puts the belt under more stress than the naturally aspirated version.

The dephaser pulley causes a distinctive tractor rattle on cold start when it begins to wear. This is not a noise to ignore.

What to check

Demand documented proof of timing belt AND dephaser pulley replacement with dates and mileage. Listen for rattling on cold start. If the belt history is unknown, budget for immediate replacement. On a turbo engine, the consequences of belt failure are even more expensive.

2
Turbo Failure
High £800 - £2,000 All 225/R26 models

The turbo bearings wear over time, especially on cars that have had delayed oil changes or have been driven hard from cold. Blue smoke on overrun (lifting off the throttle) is the classic symptom of turbo seal wear, as oil passes through the worn seals into the exhaust side.

A turbo on its way out may also produce excessive shaft play, whining noises under boost, and reduced power as the seals lose their ability to maintain pressure.

What to check

Drive the car hard, then lift off the throttle sharply and check the mirrors for blue smoke. Listen for unusual whining from the turbo under boost. Check the oil level and condition. Ask about oil change intervals. Cars with a documented history of regular oil changes are lower risk.

3
Coil Pack Failure
High £100 - £300 All 225/R26 models

The same coil pack weakness from the Clio F4R engine carries over to the turbocharged F4Rt. Failed coil packs cause misfires, rough running and a noticeable loss of power. On a turbocharged engine, misfires can also cause unburnt fuel to damage the catalytic converter.

What to check

Start the engine and listen for rough running or misfires. Rev through the range under load and feel for hesitation. Ask when the coil packs were last replaced. Aftermarket options are generally considered more durable than OEM.

4
Clutch and Dual-Mass Flywheel
High £600 - £1,200 All 225/R26 models

The dual-mass flywheel absorbs vibrations from the engine but wears out over time. Symptoms include a rattling noise at idle (different from dephaser rattle), juddering on take-off, and difficulty engaging gears smoothly. Replacing just the clutch without the flywheel is false economy if the flywheel shows wear.

Cars that have been used for track days or have had aggressive clutch use will wear out the flywheel faster.

What to check

Listen for rattling at idle with the car in neutral. Try pulling away in second gear slowly to feel for juddering. Check the clutch bite point, as a high bite suggests wear. Ask when the clutch and flywheel were last replaced.

Dashboard Cracking
Medium Cosmetic All 225/R26 models

The dashboard material on the Mk2 Megane is notorious for cracking when exposed to sunlight over time. The cracks are cosmetic but very common, unsightly, and expensive to rectify properly. A replacement dashboard from Renault is costly, and trimming companies charge significant sums to recover them.

This affects virtually every Megane II that has been parked in direct sunlight regularly. It is not specific to the RS but is worth factoring into the purchase price.

What to check

Inspect the dashboard surface carefully, particularly the top surface and around the air vents. Run your hand across it to feel for hairline cracks that may not be immediately visible. A car that has been garaged or had a windscreen cover will be in better condition.

The Verdict

The Megane RS 225 and R26 set the template for the modern hyper-hatch. The turbocharged F4Rt engine, sophisticated chassis and aggressive styling made it the front-wheel drive benchmark of its era. The R26.R is one of the most focused road-legal hot hatches ever built. Even the standard 225 is a devastating B-road weapon with a level of grip and adjustability that belies its front-wheel drive layout.

Keep up with the timing belt and dephaser maintenance, watch the turbo health, and budget for a clutch/flywheel replacement if the current one is tired. With those items covered, the Megane RS 225/R26 is genuinely thrilling ownership. Nothing from this era combines the power, chassis sophistication and sheer aggression in the same way.

The good
  • Devastating B-road performance
  • R26.R is a genuine legend
  • Strong turbocharged engine when maintained
  • Affordable entry price from £4k
Watch out for
  • Timing belt/dephaser is critical
  • Turbo failure on neglected cars
  • Clutch/flywheel replacement is expensive
  • Dashboard cracking is almost universal
