Back to basics. The ND is lighter, smaller and sharper than its predecessor, with robust SkyActiv engines and very few mechanical concerns.
The ND brought the MX-5 back to its roots. Lighter than the outgoing NC and with a sharper chassis, it is widely regarded as the best MX-5 since the original NA. The good news for buyers: there are very few serious issues.

The touchscreen on early ND models can develop a cloudy, delaminated appearance where the anti-glare coating breaks down. Mazda issued a service action for some models. Later cars use an updated screen.
Inspect the screen in direct sunlight for cloudy patches. Check if a replacement screen has already been fitted.
The factory brake pads produce significant amounts of brake dust and can squeal, particularly in cold weather. Aftermarket pads from EBC or similar solve the issue. Not a safety concern but annoying.
Inspect alloy wheels for excessive brake dust buildup. Test brakes for squealing during the test drive.
The soft top drain channels can block with debris, causing water to pool and potentially leak into the cabin. Regular clearing of the drains prevents the issue.
Check the footwells for dampness. Look at the drain channels around the soft top for debris buildup.
The ND creates significant wind buffeting at motorway speeds with the roof down. A wind deflector significantly improves this but is an extra purchase. This is a characteristic of the car, not a fault.
Test with the roof down at speed if possible. Consider budgeting for a wind deflector.
The 1.5 is the lighter, more rev-happy option that feels faster than it is. The 2.0 has worthwhile extra torque and overtaking ability. The RF (folding hard top) only comes with the 2.0. Neither engine has significant concerns.
Drive both if possible. The 1.5 is the purist's choice for B-roads. The 2.0 is better for motorway use and the RF.
The ND is the best MX-5 since the original NA. Mazda went back to basics: lighter, smaller, and sharper than the NC it replaced. The SkyActiv engines are robust and efficient, the chassis is among the best in production, and the car has none of the serious mechanical concerns of older generations.
The ND is less of a "what to watch for" car and more of a "which spec to choose" car. The 1.5 is the lightweight purist's weapon. The 2.0 RF is the year-round grand tourer. Both are outstanding. This is as close to a worry-free sports car as exists.
