5 Things to Know Before You Buy
1
Rust (Sills, Arches, Subframe)
High £300 - £2,000 All NCs

Less severe than the NB but still a concern on cars 10+ years old. Rear arches, sill seams, and the front subframe are the areas to check. Stone chip damage on the bonnet leading edge accelerates corrosion.

What to check

Inspect sills, rear arches, and underneath. Look at front subframe condition.

2
Coil Pack Failure
Medium £50 - £200 All models

Same issue as the NB. Ignition coils fail causing misfires, usually one at a time. Cheap parts, easy DIY fix.

What to check

Listen for misfiring. Replace all four as a preventative measure.

3
Power Steering Pump
Medium £200 - £600 All models

The hydraulic power steering pump can develop a whine and eventually fail. Replacement pumps are readily available. Some owners have converted to electric power steering.

What to check

Listen for whining when turning at low speed. Check power steering fluid level.

4
Folding Hard Top Mechanism (PRHT)
Medium £300 - £1,500 PRHT models only

The Power Retractable Hard Top models have a complex folding mechanism with sensors and hydraulic rams. Failures include the roof not latching properly, warning lights, and slow operation.

What to check

Operate the roof multiple times. Watch for warning lights or hesitation.

5
Clutch Slave Cylinder
Medium £150 - £400 All manual models

The clutch slave cylinder is mounted internally on the NC, meaning gearbox removal is required for replacement. The part is cheap but labour is expensive.

What to check

Test the clutch pedal for softness or spongy feel. Any fluid leak at the bellhousing area is a concern.

The Verdict

The NC is the grown-up MX-5. Bigger, more comfortable, and faster than the NB, it split opinion among purists who felt it had gained too much weight. On the road, it remains a brilliant sports car with the PRHT offering genuine year-round usability.

The 2.0-litre engine is the one to have - it transforms the car with worthwhile mid-range torque. Rust is less of a concern than on the NB but still worth checking on earlier cars. The NC offers the MX-5 experience with fewer compromises.

The good
  • More comfortable than NB
  • 2.0L engine has good torque
  • PRHT models are practical
  • Less rust-prone than NB
Watch out for
  • Heavier than NB
  • Purists prefer lighter models
  • Internal clutch slave cylinder
  • PRHT mechanism complexity
