The EA111 1.4 TSI engine uses a timing chain tensioner that is inadequate for the chain loads, particularly when oil change intervals are extended. The tensioner fails to maintain proper chain tension, allowing the chain to stretch and eventually jump timing. This destroys the interference engine by causing piston-to-valve contact, requiring complete engine rebuild or replacement. Severe oil consumption and cam follower wear (vRS Mk2)

The first and second generation EA888 engines suffer from defective piston ring design causing excessive oil consumption rates of 1 litre per 1,000 miles or worse. Simultaneously, the cam follower (part of the high-pressure fuel pump drive) wears prematurely, gouging the camshaft lobe and sending metal debris through the oil system. This combination can destroy the engine - the oil consumption starves lubrication while the follower wear contaminates what oil remains. Later EA888 Generation 3 engines largely resolved these issues.

The PD and early CR TDI engines use a hex bolt to drive the oil pump from the crankshaft. This bolt can shear without warning, causing immediate total loss of oil pressure and catastrophic engine seizure within seconds. The failure is more common on higher-mileage engines and cannot be predicted during normal inspection. Additionally, the dual-mass flywheel on these engines wears causing vibration at idle and juddering during clutch engagement, requiring expensive replacement alongside the clutch.

DQ200 7-speed DSG mechatronic failure (Mk2)

The early DQ200 7-speed dry clutch DSG transmission suffers from premature mechatronic unit failure. The mechatronic combines the transmission control module with hydraulic valve body and is prone to internal valve sticking, software corruption, and electrical failures. When it fails, the transmission can lose drive completely, select wrong gears, or refuse to engage any gear. The DQ200 has higher failure rates than the wet-clutch DQ250 and requires specialized diagnostic equipment for proper assessment.
