The EA111 1.4 TSI engine uses a timing chain tensioner that is inadequate for the chain loads, particularly when oil change intervals are extended. The tensioner fails to maintain proper chain tension, allowing the chain to stretch and eventually jump timing. This destroys the interference engine by causing piston-to-valve contact, requiring complete engine rebuild or replacement.
