The V8 N62 engine uses plastic coolant transfer pipes that run under the intake manifold in the 'valley' between cylinder banks. The M57 diesel engine uses plastic swirl flaps in the intake manifold to improve combustion at low RPM. These flaps can break off and be ingested into the engine, causing catastrophic internal damage to pistons, valves, and cylinder heads. The turbocharger actuator also commonly fails, causing loss of boost pressure and poor performance. This is a well-documented failure mode that has led many specialists to recommend prophylactic swirl flap removal.
