The V8 N62 engine uses plastic coolant transfer pipes that run under the intake manifold in the 'valley' between cylinder banks. These pipes are inaccessible without major dismantling and fail catastrophically without warning, causing immediate coolant loss and potential engine damage from overheating. The transfer case actuator motor also fails commonly on 4WD models, causing grinding noises and 4WD system warnings. Both issues are design flaws specific to the E53 generation.
Valley pipe failure causes catastrophic coolant loss leading to engine overheating and potential head gasket or engine block damage costing £3,000-8,000. Transfer case failure requires complete unit replacement. Both repairs require extensive dismantling making labour costs very high.
Check the coolant level and look for any white residue or staining around hoses, the expansion tank and radiator. After a test drive, check the temperature gauge stayed stable and look underneath for drips. Ask whether key cooling components have been replaced.
The M57 diesel engine uses plastic swirl flaps in the intake manifold to improve combustion at low RPM. These flaps can break off and be ingested into the engine, causing catastrophic internal damage to pistons, valves, and cylinder heads. The turbocharger actuator also commonly fails, causing loss of boost pressure and poor performance. This is a well-documented failure mode that has led many specialists to recommend prophylactic swirl flap removal.
