The E30 is notoriously rust-prone with structural corrosion being the leading cause of vehicle write-offs. Critical areas include rear subframe mounting points, windscreen surround, sunroof cassette, battery tray, inner and outer sills, wheel arches, and door frames. The sunroof drain tubes frequently block causing water to pool in the roof cassette and rot the A-pillars from inside. Windscreen rust often spreads behind the screen where it cannot be seen until structural damage occurs. Unlike mechanical faults, advanced structural rust makes the car unsafe and uneconomical to repair.

The E46's cooling system uses plastic components that become brittle and fail catastrophically between 60-100k miles. The expansion tank, radiator end tanks, thermostat housing, and water pump impeller all fail within a narrow mileage window, often causing rapid overheating and potential head gasket damage. This is the most notorious E46 reliability issue and affects virtually every car of this generation. Later generations moved to more durable aluminium and metal components.
What happens if ignoredComplete cooling system failure causes rapid overheating within minutes of driving. Continued operation with overheating will crack the cylinder head or destroy the head gasket, requiring £2000-4000 additional repairs. The car is not safe to drive with cooling system issues present.

The N54 twin-turbo engine uses a high-pressure fuel pump driven by the intake camshaft to supply the direct injection system. Early pumps (index numbers below 10) have inadequate internal sealing and fail without warning, causing fuel starvation, long cranking times, and engine stalling. This was BMW's most significant warranty issue on the N54 and was subject to an extended warranty program. Later index 10+ pumps have improved sealing but are not immune to failure. The pump failure can leave drivers stranded and potentially cause dangerous situations in traffic.
