The oil pump drive chain on BKP 2.0 TDI engines fails without warning, causing immediate oil pressure loss and catastrophic engine damage. The drive chain is undersized for the pump load and stretches until it jumps timing or snaps completely. This is a well-documented failure mode specific to the BKP engine code, with no advance warning symptoms. Later CR TDI engines use a gear-driven oil pump that eliminates this failure mode.
Complete engine failure occurs within seconds of chain failure. Oil starvation destroys bearings, camshafts, and cylinder walls. Engine rebuild costs £4,000-6,000, often exceeding vehicle value. The car must not be driven if oil pressure loss is suspected.

This failure mode is specific to FSI engines and was eliminated on later TSI designs which use a different fuel pump arrangement.
