TSI engines use a timing chain system where the chain tensioner and plastic chain guides fail prematurely, causing timing chain stretch and eventual jump or breakage. The tensioner relies on oil pressure and fails when oil changes are extended beyond 5,000 miles or when incorrect oil specifications are used. Chain guide failure allows the chain to contact other engine components, creating distinctive rattling noises. If the chain jumps timing, valve-to-piston contact can cause extensive internal damage requiring complete engine rebuild.
