The 4D56 2.5-litre diesel engine uses an interference design where pistons and valves occupy the same space at different times. The VT12 variable geometry turbocharger on the 4D56 engine is prone to actuator mechanism failure and carbon build-up in the variable vane system. The actuator arm that controls vane position can seize due to carbon deposits and heat cycling, leading to loss of boost pressure and reduced power output. Oil starvation from irregular servicing accelerates bearing wear within the turbo cartridge. This is a well-documented issue on high-mileage KB generation L200s.

Complete turbo failure requires replacement of the entire unit. Continued driving with a failing turbo can cause engine damage through oil starvation or debris ingestion. The vehicle will have severely reduced power and poor fuel economy, making it unsuitable for towing or highway use.
