The last Fiesta ever made, and it went out on a high. A 3-cylinder turbo with surprising torque, a sharper chassis than the Mk7, and the knowledge that no more will follow.
Ford moved to a 1.5-litre 3-cylinder turbo for the Mk8 ST. Different character to the Mk7: more torque, less rev-happy, and a unique exhaust note. 197bhp as standard with Ford Performance and Mountune upgrades available.
The Mk8 is the last Fiesta ever made. Ford discontinued the model entirely in 2023, which means values should hold well. The optional Performance Pack (Quaife LSD, launch control, shift indicator light) is the specification to look for. We've compiled 4 known issues for the Mk8 ST in our database.

A small number of early Mk8 STs have experienced cylinder head cracking. The symptom is coolant loss with no visible external leak. The coolant is consumed internally and may show as white exhaust smoke under load. This is a serious issue that requires cylinder head replacement.
The problem appears to be relatively rare and concentrated in early production cars, but the cost of repair is significant. Pre-facelift models warrant extra scrutiny.
Check the coolant level is correct and the expansion tank shows no signs of pressure buildup. Look for white residue around the oil filler cap (may indicate head gasket issues). Ask for service records showing consistent coolant levels. A compression test can confirm head integrity.
The optional Quaife limited-slip differential makes a distinctive clicking or ratcheting noise when turning at full lock, particularly in car parks. This is normal behaviour for a helical LSD and not a fault. It is most noticeable at low speeds during tight turns.
Some owners are surprised by this noise, but it is a characteristic of the differential design and does not indicate any mechanical problem. Every Quaife-equipped Mk8 ST does this.
If the car has the Performance Pack, expect LSD noise on full lock. This is normal. If you hear grinding, clunking or whining at speed, that is different and warrants further investigation. The Performance Pack adds significant value to the car.
The SYNC 3 infotainment system can freeze or become unresponsive, requiring a restart. This typically happens during navigation or when switching between audio sources. It is more of an inconvenience than a mechanical concern.
During the test drive, use the infotainment system actively. Switch between sources, try navigation, and check Bluetooth connectivity. Software updates from Ford can resolve most freezing issues. Check that the system is running the latest firmware version.
The clutch slave cylinder can fail, causing a soft or spongy clutch pedal. In some cases the pedal may sink to the floor or the bite point shifts significantly. The part itself is relatively inexpensive but the labour varies depending on accessibility.
Press the clutch pedal repeatedly and check for consistent resistance and bite point. A pedal that feels soft, sinks slowly, or has a wandering bite point suggests slave cylinder wear. Check under the car for any hydraulic fluid leaks near the gearbox bellhousing.
The rear anti-roll bar drop links can wear, causing a knocking or rattling noise from the rear suspension over bumps and uneven surfaces. This is a straightforward and inexpensive fix but can be annoying if left unaddressed.
Drive over speed bumps and rough surfaces during the test drive and listen for knocking from the rear. Grab the anti-roll bar drop links by hand and check for play. Worn links are a cheap and simple replacement at any garage.
The Mk8 ST is the last Fiesta and it went out on a high. The 1.5-litre 3-cylinder engine sounds unique and delivers surprising torque across the rev range. The chassis is even better than the Mk7, with sharper turn-in and more composure at the limit.
With the Performance Pack (Quaife LSD, launch control) it is a serious driver's car that punches well above its price point. Values should hold because Ford discontinued the Fiesta entirely. An unmodified, low-mileage Performance Pack car with full service history is the one to find.
