Understated quality, avoid the early B8 petrols
The quiet achiever in the compact executive segment, sitting between the driver-focused BMW 3 Series and the status-led Mercedes C-Class. Used B8 facelift models (2013-2015) range from £8,000 to £15,000, while B9 models (2016-2023) sit between £14,000 and £28,000. Popular with professionals, company car drivers, and Avant estate buyers who want understated premium quality. The A4 nameplate ended with the B9 — its successor is badged A5.
We track 20 known issues across the Audi A4 range, including 7 rated as safety-critical. Knowing which variants and configurations to approach with caution can save you from expensive surprises after purchase.

B7 (2005–2008) — Petrol options included the 1.8 Turbo, 2.0 FSI, 2.0 TFSI, 2.4 V6, 3.0 V6, 3.1 V6, 4.2 V8, with 1.9 TDI PD, 2.0 TDI, 2.5 TDI V6, 2.7 TDI V6 on the diesel side. Our database flags 12 known issues on this generation, 4 of which are rated as safety-critical. The most significant concern is Oil pump drive hex bolt failure (£1,500–£3,000 to address).
B8 (2008–2015) — Petrol options included the 1.8 TFSI, 2.0 TFSI, 3.0 TFSI V6, 3.2 V6, 3.2 V6, with 2.0 TDI, 2.0 TDI, 3.0 TDI V6 on the diesel side. Our database flags 12 known issues on this generation, 4 of which are rated as safety-critical. The most significant concern is Oil pump chain failure (£1,500–£3,000 to address).
B9 (2016–2023) — Petrol options included the 1.4 TFSI, 2.0 TFSI, 2.9 TFSI V6, 3.0 TFSI V6, with 2.0 TDI, 3.0 TDI V6 on the diesel side. We track 5 known issues on this generation, with 2 classified as significant. The most significant concern is Coolant pump and thermostat housing leaks (£300–£500 to address).
The oil pump drive on B7 1.9 TDI PD engines uses a hex bolt that can shear without warning, causing complete loss of oil pressure and catastrophic engine failure within seconds. This is a well-documented failure mode specific to the PD injection system's high mechanical loads. The updated bolt has a different part number but many cars still have the original failure-prone component. Engine rebuild costs typically exceed the car's value, making this a walk-away issue without documented bolt replacement.
Complete engine failure occurs within minutes if the bolt shears while driving. The engine seizes due to oil starvation, requiring a full rebuild costing £8,000-£15,000. Recovery is required as the car cannot be driven. No warning is given before failure occurs.
Check the oil level before the engine is started. Ask the seller how often they top up the oil between services. After a test drive, check the level again and look behind the car for blue or grey exhaust smoke under acceleration.
The high-pressure fuel pump cam follower on B7 2.0 TFSI engines wears through due to inadequate hardening, destroying the camshaft lobe beneath it. This is the most extensively documented failure mode on EA113 engines, with the follower acting as a sacrificial component. Once the follower wears through, metal debris contaminates the oil system and the camshaft requires replacement. Upgraded followers are available but many cars still have the original component.
Complete camshaft replacement is required once the follower wears through the lobe surface. Repair costs £2,000-£4,000 including labour for camshaft replacement and timing chain service. Metal debris may contaminate the oil system requiring additional engine internal cleaning. The car should not be driven with confirmed cam follower failure.
Listen carefully for a rattle or ticking noise from the engine on cold start — this is the most common early sign. Ask for evidence of chain replacement in the service history. On higher-mileage cars without documented replacement, budget for preventative work.
The Multitronic CVT transmission is notoriously unreliable with widespread failures affecting the steel belt, pulleys, and control systems. Unlike a conventional automatic, this transmission cannot be meaningfully repaired and requires complete replacement when it fails. Symptoms include jerking, slipping, and complete loss of drive. Many specialists refuse to work on Multitronic transmissions due to poor reliability. B8 generation cars with Multitronic should also be avoided.
Complete transmission replacement is required when the CVT fails. Replacement transmissions cost £3,000-£5,000 fitted. No economical repair options exist for internal CVT damage. The car cannot be driven safely once slipping occurs as power delivery becomes unpredictable.
Test the automatic gearbox extensively in slow traffic, car parks and on hill starts. Feel for any juddering, hesitation or clunking during gear changes. Try repeated low-speed manoeuvres as this is where problems are most apparent.
The balance shaft oil pump chain can fail on 2008-2012 diesel models, similar to the hex bolt issue on B7 PD engines. When the chain breaks, oil pressure drops to zero causing catastrophic engine failure within minutes. This affects the oil pump drive to the balance shaft module and is most common on CAGA and CJCA engine codes. The failure occurs without warning and typically results in engine replacement rather than repair.
Complete engine failure occurs rapidly once the oil pump chain breaks. The engine seizes due to oil starvation requiring replacement or complete rebuild costing £5,000-£10,000. The car cannot be driven once oil pressure is lost. Recovery is required immediately.
Check the oil level before the engine is started. Ask the seller how often they top up the oil between services. After a test drive, check the level again and look behind the car for blue or grey exhaust smoke under acceleration.
The CAEB engine code EA888 Gen1/2 engines from 2009-2012 have defective piston rings causing oil consumption exceeding 1 litre per 1000 miles. This was subject to a class action lawsuit and warranty extension in the US. The defect is manufacturing-related and affects the oil control rings, leading to oil burning and potential engine damage. Blue smoke from the exhaust and rapid oil level drops are characteristic symptoms.
Continued oil burning damages the catalytic converter and can cause engine bearing damage if oil levels drop critically low. Complete engine rebuild with new piston rings costs £3,000-£6,000. The car requires constant oil monitoring and frequent top-ups making it unsuitable for normal use.
Check the oil level before the engine is started. Ask the seller how often they top up the oil between services. After a test drive, check the level again and look behind the car for blue or grey exhaust smoke under acceleration.

Based on 1.5M real DVSA MOT tests, the Audi A4 fails more often than average on several items. The biggest outlier is fluid leak at 693x the fleet average, followed by emissions failure (177x).
When viewing a specific car, check its MOT history for recurring advisories in these categories. See the full Audi A4 MOT failure breakdown for data at every mileage point.
Routine servicing (oil and filter change every 10k miles) typically costs £80–£150 at an independent garage.
The bigger-ticket items to budget for include timing chain service inspection (£800–£1,500), cam follower inspection (£200–£400), s tronic dsg fluid (£200–£350).

The Audi A4 has some well-documented weak points, including 7 safety-critical issues that demand careful checking. The right example, properly maintained, can still be a sound purchase — but cutting corners on the pre-purchase inspection is not advisable. 2019-2022 B9 facelift with 2.0 TDI 35/40 TFSI and S tronic gearbox. The EA888 Gen 3B petrol engine fixed the oil consumption disaster, AdBlue hardware was updated, and mild-hybrid assistance was added. For budget buyers, a 2013-2015 late B8 facelift with the 2.0 TDI and manual gearbox (avoiding Multitronic CVT) is well-proven.
