Which Freelander are you looking at?

Each Freelander generation has its own weak spots. Pick the one you’re viewing to see what to check.

  1. Timing belt failure

    Safety risk L359

The 2.2 Td4 diesel engine uses an interference timing belt system where belt failure causes immediate catastrophic damage to pistons and valves. Unlike many modern diesels that use timing chains, Land Rover retained the belt system throughout L359 production. The belt typically fails without warning between 60,000-100,000 miles, often closer to the lower end on vehicles with irregular service history. Complete engine rebuild or replacement is required after belt failure, making this the single most expensive non-collision failure mode on Freelander 2.

What to check: Request full service history and specifically ask when the timing belt was last changed - look for invoices showing belt, water pump, tensioner and idler pulley replacement together. Examine the belt through the top inspection cover if accessible - look for fraying, cracking, or oil contamination...

  2. Fuel tank and pipe corrosion

    Safety risk L314, L359

Freelander models suffer from severe fuel system corrosion, showing MOT failure rates over 100 times the fleet average for fuel tank and pipe security issues. The steel fuel pipes and tank mounting straps corrode extensively, particularly where they pass near the rear suspension mounting points. This creates dangerous situations where fuel lines can separate or fuel tanks can drop from their mounting points. The problem is most severe on higher-mileage examples but has been observed across all engine variants.

What to check: Look under the vehicle around the fuel tank area for any signs of fuel staining, wet patches, or strong fuel odours. Visually inspect the fuel tank mounting straps for corrosion, paying particular attention to where they bolt to the body. Check fuel pipes for surface corrosion, kinking, or signs ...

  3. Haldex clutch failure

    Wear item L359

The Haldex all-wheel-drive system uses an electronically controlled multi-plate clutch to distribute power to the rear axle when slip is detected. The clutch pack wears progressively and the hydraulic pump can fail, causing loss of four-wheel drive capability. This is accelerated by irregular Haldex fluid changes - Land Rover originally claimed lifetime fill but specialists universally recommend 20,000-mile service intervals. Failed Haldex systems typically trigger dashboard warning lights and leave the vehicle in front-wheel drive only mode.

What to check: Ask the seller when the Haldex system was last serviced and request invoices showing fluid and filter changes. Check for any dashboard warning lights related to 4WD, traction control, or stability systems. Look under the rear of the vehicle for oil leaks around the rear differential area - Haldex...

  4. Timing chain issues

    Engine damage risk L359

The 2.0 Si4 petrol engine is based on Ford's EcoBoost architecture and suffers from premature timing chain stretch and tensioner failure. The timing chain system controls both inlet and exhaust camshaft timing, and when stretch occurs, the engine loses power and develops a characteristic rattling noise on startup. This issue is well-documented across the Ford EcoBoost family and affects Freelander 2 models fitted with this engine. Continued driving with stretched timing chains can cause timing jump and internal engine damage.

What to check: Check the oil level on the dipstick - low oil accelerates timing chain wear and tensioner failure. Ask about any recent loss of power, rough idle, or engine management light illumination. Request service history showing regular oil changes at 6,000-7,500 mile intervals rather than the manufacture...

  5. Handbrake cable seizure and efficiency failure

Safety and MOT risk L314, L359

Freelander models show exceptionally high handbrake failure rates across all generations, with MOT data showing failure rates over 200 times the fleet average. The handbrake cable system is prone to seizure and corrosion, particularly where cables pass through the rear subframe and around the fuel tank area. Cable seizure prevents proper brake operation and causes MOT failures for insufficient parking brake efficiency. The problem affects vehicles from low mileage onwards and worsens with age.

What to check: Apply the handbrake firmly and check that it holds the vehicle on a slight slope - the handbrake should engage within 3-5 clicks of the lever. Look under the rear of the vehicle for frayed, kinked, or obviously corroded handbrake cables running along the exhaust system. Check the handbrake lever ...

Freelander questions

Is the Land Rover Freelander reliable?

23.7% of Freelander models fail their MOT based on 949,033 tests analysed. That’s about average for the class. There are 5 known problems to watch for, the most serious being timing belt failure. A full history check shows whether a specific car has had related write-offs or insurance claims.

What are the main problems with a Land Rover Freelander?

The most serious known issues are timing belt failure, fuel tank and pipe corrosion, haldex clutch failure. Problems vary by generation, so check which apply to the year you’re looking at. Our car check flags whether a specific Freelander has been written off or had insurance claims linked to these faults.

How do I check if a Land Rover Freelander has outstanding finance?

Enter the registration on this page. We query Experian’s finance database and return any outstanding agreements within a minute. If finance is still owed, the finance company can legally repossess the car even after you’ve paid the seller. At £7.49 it’s the cheapest way to avoid a car that isn’t legally for sale.

How do I check if a Land Rover Freelander has been written off?

Our check queries Experian’s insurance write-off database for Cat A, B, S and N markers. A Cat S or N Freelander has been structurally or non-structurally damaged and repaired. This doesn’t mean it’s unsafe, but it affects resale value and some insurers won’t cover it. The check costs £7.49.

Can I check a Land Rover Freelander for free?

You can check MOT history free on GOV.UK, which shows past test results and advisories. What it won’t show is outstanding finance, write-offs or theft markers, which are the things that actually cost you money after you’ve bought. Our full check adds all of that for £7.49, using Experian data.

Is a Land Rover Freelander HPI check worth it?

HPI is one brand of car check. Our check uses the same Experian data covering finance, stolen, write-off and keeper history, plus MOT analysis and known Freelander faults that HPI doesn’t include. At £7.49 it’s typically less than half the price of an HPI check.

What does a Land Rover Freelander fail its MOT on?

The most common MOT failure on the Freelander is power steering fault. 23.7% of Freelander models fail overall, based on 949,033 tests. Checking a car’s full MOT history before buying shows you recurring problems the seller might not mention.
