The Focus is the best-selling Ford in the UK and the model we have the most data on. We've analysed 3,803,652 MOT tests on Focus models and identified 54 known issues, of which 9 are classified as DANGEROUS. That is an extraordinary volume of failure data.
The headline risk on the Mk3 Focus is the PowerShift dual-clutch automatic gearbox. This transmission was fitted to a huge number of cars from 2011 onwards and has a well-documented history of shuddering, hesitation, and outright failure. Transmission fluid changes are critical to its survival, and many owners (and some dealers) skipped them. Replacement costs £1,500 to £3,000. If you are looking at a Mk3 Focus automatic, the service records are not optional. They are the difference between a working car and a write-off.
The Mk2 Focus ST with the 2.5-litre five-cylinder engine suffers from cracked cylinder liners, costing £3,000 to £5,000. This is a serious engine failure linked to overheating from neglected coolant system maintenance. Ford Fiesta (41 issues, 8 DANGEROUS)
The Fiesta was the UK's best-selling car for decades and remains one of the most common used cars on the market. We've identified 41 known issues, of which 8 are classified as DANGEROUS.
The biggest risk is cylinder head cracking and potential fire risk on the Mk7 Fiesta, covered by Recall 14B13. This affects certain 1.0 EcoBoost engines and the repair costs £1,500 to £2,500 if the recall was not carried out. The service records will show whether this recall was completed at a Ford dealer. If you are looking at a Mk7 Fiesta with the 1.0 EcoBoost, this is the first thing to check.
The Mk7 Fiesta also has the PowerShift dual-clutch automatic, with the same failure pattern as the Focus: shuddering, clutch slip, and eventual failure costing £1,500 to £3,000. The Mk8 Fiesta suffers from head gasket failure on the 1.0 EcoBoost, costing £1,200 to £2,000.

Ford Mondeo (10 issues, 2 DANGEROUS)

The standout risk on the Mk5 Mondeo is oil pump drive chain failure on the 2.0 TDCi diesel. The oil pump chain can stretch and skip, starving the engine of oil pressure. Regular oil changes with the correct specification oil are the only preventive measure.

Ford Kuga
The Kuga is Ford's mid-size SUV and shares much of its engineering with the Focus, including the engines and transmissions. That means it inherits many of the same risks.
The 1.5 and 2.0 EcoBoost petrol engines need regular oil changes to prevent turbocharger wear. The diesel models share the same DPF sensitivity as the Focus: short-run commuting without regeneration cycles leads to blocked DPFs costing £1,000 to £1,500 to replace. Service records confirming regular oil and filter changes give you confidence that the turbo and DPF were not neglected.
Automatic Kugas with the PowerShift gearbox carry the same risk as the Focus. Check for transmission fluid changes in the service records. The Kuga's higher weight puts more stress on the gearbox, making regular maintenance even more important than on the lighter Focus.
The Kuga also has a known issue with coolant leaks on EcoBoost models, which can cause overheating and head gasket damage if not caught early. Look for coolant system inspections and top-ups in the records.
Ford Puma
The Puma is Ford's newest crossover, launched in 2019, and most examples are still relatively young. Service history matters here for warranty protection and resale value rather than mechanical risk.
The Puma uses the 1.0 EcoBoost engine in mild-hybrid (mHEV) form. The EcoBoost family has a well-documented history of coolant hose and head gasket issues on earlier applications. Ford addressed many of these problems by the time the Puma launched, but regular servicing remains essential to maintain the 48-volt mild-hybrid system and the turbocharger.
Because the Puma is relatively new, most examples should still have full dealer service history. Any Puma without it is a warning sign: either the owner did not care about maintenance or the car has had problems that discouraged regular dealer visits. Given the car's age, there is little excuse for gaps in the record.
Ford EcoSport
The EcoSport is Ford's smallest SUV and was built in India and Romania rather than at a European Ford plant. Build quality complaints are more common on this model, making service history a useful check on whether problems were caught and fixed under warranty.
The 1.0 EcoBoost engine in the EcoSport is the same unit as in the Fiesta and Focus, carrying the same coolant system risks. The 1.5 TDCi diesel has DPF issues similar to other Ford diesels. Service records are especially valuable on the EcoSport because they provide evidence that any warranty claims or known-issue repairs were addressed by the dealer network.
Resale values on the EcoSport are lower than on the Puma and Kuga, so the percentage impact of missing service history is magnified. A £500 reduction on a £6,000 car is proportionally significant.

Red flags in Ford service records
- Any gap of more than 14 months between services. Ford's schedule is 12 months or 12,500 miles. There is no condition-based flexibility. A gap means a missed service, full stop.
- PowerShift automatic with no transmission fluid change by 40,000 miles. Ford originally marketed the PowerShift as "sealed for life." It is not. The fluid degrades and the clutch pack suffers. If the records don't show a fluid change, budget for a rebuild.
- 1.0 EcoBoost with no coolant system work noted. The early 1.0 EcoBoost engines have coolant hose issues that can cause overheating. If the records show no coolant-related work on a high-mileage example, the car may be living on borrowed time.
- Diesel model with only short-trip use and no DPF regeneration mention. DPFs block up when the car only does short runs. A diesel Focus or Kuga used as a school-run car without regular motorway drives is a DPF failure waiting to happen.
- Recall 14B13 not showing as completed on a Mk7 Fiesta 1.0 EcoBoost. This is a fire-risk recall. If the records don't show it was done, check with Ford directly before buying.
- Multiple dealers in quick succession. Frequent changes of servicing dealer, especially combined with short ownership periods, often mean someone discovered a problem and moved the car on.
- Dealer records stopping after 3 years. Warranty expired and the owner switched to an independent. Ask for invoices covering the gap.
Good signs in the records
- Consistent 12-month services with no gaps, ideally at the same dealer
- Transmission fluid change noted on PowerShift automatic models
- Recall work completed promptly, especially Recall 14B13 on Fiesta
- Coolant system inspection or work on EcoBoost models

Ford keeps it simple. Unlike BMW's condition-based system or Mercedes' ASSYST monitoring, Ford uses a fixed schedule:

The simplicity of Ford's schedule makes gaps easy to spot. Count the service entries, check the dates, and you can immediately see whether the car was maintained on time. There is no ambiguity about whether a service was due or not.
How much does missing history cost on a Ford?
Missing service history reduces a Ford's value by 10-15%. The percentage is lower than on premium brands like BMW or Mercedes, but on cars in the £5,000 to £15,000 price bracket, it still amounts to real money:
- Fiesta (£4,000-£10,000): Missing history costs roughly £400-£1,500
- Focus (£5,000-£15,000): Missing history costs roughly £500-£2,000

Beyond resale value, the practical risk is what matters. A Focus with a PowerShift gearbox and no service records could need £3,000 in transmission work within months. A Fiesta with an uncompleted recall could have a fire-risk cylinder head issue. Service records don't just protect the car's value. They tell you whether the car is safe to buy at all.
Independent vs franchised dealer servicing
Under UK law, Ford can't void your warranty for using an independent garage, provided the work meets Ford's specification and follows the correct schedule. Ford is one of the brands where independent servicing is especially common. Ford dealer labour rates are lower than premium brands, but many owners still prefer their local garage for routine work.
Ford servicing is relatively straightforward compared to German premium brands. Most independent garages have the tools and knowledge to service a Focus or Fiesta properly. There are no condition-based monitoring systems to reset, no specialist diagnostic equipment needed for routine work. The main exception is the PowerShift gearbox, which benefits from a specialist who understands its specific fluid and clutch requirements.
If the dealer records stop and the seller says it was "serviced locally," ask which garage. Ask for invoices showing what was done, what oil specification was used, and whether the PowerShift fluid was changed on automatic models. "Full service £99" from an unknown garage with no detail is not reassurance.
