Reported issues for this Toyota Rav4
These are the most commonly reported problems on Toyota Rav4 models (2006–2012), based on owner reports and workshop data across the UK.
1. Cylinder Head Gasket Failure & Block Corrosion
Electrolytic corrosion and pitting of the aluminum block under the head gasket—a fundamental design flaw in the casting and cooling system design. The irregular "spiny type" cylinder liner exteriors and poor material selection in the aluminum die-cast block make it susceptible to galvanic attack, particularly if coolant is neglected or incorrect coolant type is used. Corrosion eats through the gasket seal, allowing coolant into the cylinders or oil into the cooling system.[2]
2. High Oil Consumption
The 2AD-FTV exhibits abnormally high oil consumption from new—a congenital defect of the engine family. Root causes include piston ring wear, bore glazing (poor finish or manufacturing defect), and turbocharger seal degradation. Even Toyota-issued technical service bulletins for piston and ring replacement on certain engines failed to resolve the issue permanently.[1][2]
