The turbocharger wastegate actuator fails due to carbon buildup and mechanical wear, particularly on TDI engines. The actuator controls boost pressure by opening and closing the wastegate valve. When it fails, the turbocharger cannot regulate boost pressure properly, causing either overboosting (with potential engine damage) or underboosting (with severe power loss). This is documented across all TDI variants and often occurs alongside other carbon-related issues in vehicles used primarily for urban driving.

The rubber dust covers protecting suspension ball joints and bushes split and deteriorate, allowing water and dirt ingress. MOT data shows Touran models fail at 61 times the fleet average for this defect across all variants. The problem particularly affects lower ball joint boots and anti-roll bar link dust covers. Once split, the underlying joint wears rapidly due to contamination, leading to more expensive repairs.
