Vauxhall Zafira Problems & Known Issues

A critical safety recall affects all Zafira models due to heater blower motor resistor overheating that can ignite surrounding materials and cause cabin fires. The resistor pack, located behind the dashboard, can fail due to poor ventilation and cause temperatures high enough to melt plastic components and start fires. Multiple vehicle fires were reported before the recall was issued. Vauxhall redesigned the resistor mounting and improved ventilation to prevent overheating. The Z16XE and Z18XE petrol engines in first-generation Zafiras use interference timing belt systems where the belt must be replaced every 80,000 miles or 5 years. These are interference engines - if the belt breaks, the pistons will contact the valves causing catastrophic internal damage. Belt failure typically occurs without warning and destroys the engine beyond economical repair. The cambelt drives both camshafts and the water pump, so all components should be replaced together to prevent premature failure.

The front and rear subframes are load-bearing structures that mount suspension components, and corrosion in these areas creates dangerous structural weakness. This affects all generations but is most severe on higher-mileage examples. The problem is widespread across all engine variants and represents one of the most serious safety defects documented on this model.
