The Mk4 Supra is one of the most iconic sports cars ever made. The 2JZ engine is legendarily strong, but these are now serious money and the majority of surviving examples have been modified to some degree.

Here are the five issues that matter most, drawn from specialist knowledge and owner communities across the UK and worldwide.

5 Things to Know Before You Buy
1
Turbo Failure and Boost Creep
High £2,000 - £5,000 Twin turbo models

The sequential twin-turbo system uses a complex arrangement of vacuum lines, actuators, and solenoids. The system can develop boost creep (uncontrolled boost rise) from worn actuator diaphragms.

Many UK cars have been converted to single turbo setups. Check what turbo configuration the car runs and whether the conversion has been carried out by a reputable specialist.

What to check

Test through the full rev range. Check for smooth turbo transition around 4,000 rpm on stock twin-turbo cars. Single turbo conversions need full documentation from a recognised builder. Inspect all vacuum lines and boost pipework for deterioration.

2
Gearbox Weakness (V160 / W58)
High £2,000 - £6,000 Modified cars especially

The V160 6-speed manual is strong but the W58 5-speed (early NA cars) has weaker synchros. Even the V160 can fail on heavily modified cars running 500+ bhp.

What to check

Test all gears for smooth engagement. Listen for grinding or crunching, especially 2nd and 3rd. Ask about power modifications and whether the gearbox has been rebuilt. On high-power builds, ask what strengthening has been done.

3
Fuel System Degradation
Medium £500 - £2,000 All Mk4 Supras

On cars that have sat or been infrequently used, fuel lines, injectors and fuel pump can degrade. Hardened fuel lines are a fire risk. Original fuel pumps are 25+ years old and may not deliver adequate pressure.

What to check

Inspect fuel lines for hardening or cracking. Check for fuel smell around the engine bay. Ask when the fuel pump and filter were last replaced. On turbo cars, fuel system upgrades may be needed if power has been increased.

4
ECU Capacitor Failure
Medium £300 - £800 All Mk4 Supras

The original ECU uses electrolytic capacitors that dry out with age. This can cause rough running, poor fuel economy, or complete no-start conditions. ECU recapping is a well-known fix in the Supra community.

What to check

If the car runs rough or has intermittent electrical issues, ECU capacitors may need recapping. Specialist ECU repair services are available in the UK. Many modified cars will have aftermarket ECUs, which avoids this issue entirely.

5
Rust (Sills, Arches, Boot Floor)
High £500 - £5,000 UK-market and import cars

As a 90s Japanese car in the UK climate, rust is a major concern. Sills, rear arches, boot floor, and battery tray are common rot spots. Many UK Supras are Japanese imports with potentially less rust initially, but years of UK weather take their toll.

What to check

Inspect sills and rear arches carefully. Check boot floor and spare wheel well for soft spots. Japanese imports may have less structural rust but check thoroughly. At these prices, any significant rust is a serious concern and should be factored into your offer.

The Verdict

The Mk4 Supra is an icon. The 2JZ engine is legendarily strong and capable of extraordinary power with modification. In standard form, the twin-turbo car delivers effortless performance with a turbine-smooth power delivery.

These are now serious money. A genuine UK-spec twin-turbo 6-speed manual Supra in clean condition is a six-figure car. Even NA and automatic cars have risen substantially. The key is originality, documentation, and rust-free condition.

Have any prospective purchase inspected by a Supra specialist. At these values, a pre-purchase inspection is a small price to pay for peace of mind.

The good
  • Legendary 2JZ engine strength
  • Iconic 90s design
  • Strong value appreciation
  • Huge specialist community
Watch out for
