Early EA888 Generation 1 and 2 engines suffer defective piston rings causing excessive oil consumption up to 1 litre per 1000 miles. The same engines also experience timing chain stretch due to inadequate tensioner design. Oil starvation from high consumption accelerates timing chain wear. This combination creates a cascade failure mode where oil consumption leads to chain failure and catastrophic engine damage.
Catastrophic engine failure from timing chain jump or oil starvation. Rebuild costs £4,000-£8,000. Blue smoke indicates failing MOT emissions test. The engine should be monitored closely and not driven if oil consumption exceeds 1 litre per 1000 miles.
Check the oil level before the engine is started. Ask the seller how often they top up the oil between services. After a test drive, check the level again and look behind the car for blue or grey exhaust smoke under acceleration.
The BLS 1.9 TDI engine suffers connecting rod bearing failure leading to catastrophic rod seizure or complete rod breakage. This typically occurs between 80,000-150,000 miles and is uneconomical to repair. The failure is sudden and destroys the engine block, requiring complete replacement. This affects the last generation of PD (Pumpe Düse) technology before common-rail diesels.

PD (Pumpe Düse) TDI engines suffer oil pump failure causing loss of oil pressure and catastrophic engine damage. The same engines have injector mount failures where injectors loosen in the cylinder head, causing combustion gas leakage and potential injector ejection. Early 170hp models are particularly affected by injector mount issues. Both failures can cause complete engine destruction.
Oil pump failure causes immediate engine seizure requiring complete replacement. Injector mount failure can result in injector ejection through bonnet causing fire risk. Both failures are uneconomical to repair. Total costs £3,000-£6,000.
Check for fuel smells around the engine bay and underneath the car. Look for staining or wetness around fuel lines and connections. Injector issues may cause rough running or misfires that are most noticeable at idle.
The DQ200 7-speed dry-clutch DSG transmission suffers widespread mechatronic unit failures. The mechatronic unit contains the hydraulic control valves and electronic control module that manage clutch engagement and gear selection. Failure causes complete loss of drive, violent jerking, or the transmission getting stuck in gear. This is the most documented failure on Mk2 DSG models and requires expensive specialist repair.
Complete transmission failure requiring mechatronic unit replacement or transmission rebuild. Car may become stranded without warning. Repair costs £1,500-£3,000. Used parts are common but reliability is questionable.
