The AL4 four-speed automatic gearbox is fitted across multiple Peugeot and Citroën models but has fundamental design weaknesses in the valve body and hydraulic control systems. The gearbox overheats easily due to inadequate cooling, causing solenoid failure and valve body warping. This leads to erratic gear selection, harsh shifts, and complete transmission failure. Rebuild costs often exceed the vehicle's value, making this effectively a write-off fault for most 206s.

Complete transmission failure requires replacement or rebuild costing £1,500-£3,000. Many owners opt to scrap the vehicle rather than repair. The car may enter limp mode with only 3rd gear available, making it dangerous in traffic. No temporary fix exists for internal AL4 failures.

What to check

Test the automatic gearbox extensively in slow traffic, car parks and on hill starts. Feel for any juddering, hesitation or clunking during gear changes. Try repeated low-speed manoeuvres as this is where problems are most apparent.

BSI (Body Systems Interface) module failure

The BSI module controls all body electrical systems including central locking, windows, wipers, indicators, and immobiliser. The module is located under the dashboard and is highly susceptible to water damage from the 206's notorious cabin leaks. Water ingress causes corrosion of the circuit board, leading to random electrical failures that can leave the car immobilised. BSI failure often occurs in conjunction with water ingress issues.

BSI failure can render the car completely immobile through immobiliser activation or prevent use of essential safety systems. Replacement BSI modules require coding to the vehicle, which must be done by a specialist. Used modules are often unreliable. The car remains functional for driving but comfort and security systems fail.

Head gasket failure

The TU series engines are prone to head gasket failure, particularly the 1.4 8-valve TU3JP engine. The aluminium cylinder head expands at a different rate to the cast iron block, causing the gasket to fail between cylinders or into the cooling system. This is exacerbated by overheating from cooling system neglect or thermostat failure. Head gasket failure leads to coolant loss, overheating, and potential engine seizure if driven when overheated.

Turbo failure

The turbochargers on HDi diesel engines fail due to oil contamination, lack of maintenance, or bearing wear. The 2.0 HDi DW10TD engine is particularly prone to turbo failure, with replacement costs often exceeding the vehicle's value. Failed turbos leak oil into the intercooler system and exhaust, producing blue or black smoke. Turbo failure is often accompanied by loss of power and whistling sounds from the engine bay.

Turbo failure results in significant power loss, oil contamination of the intake system, and potential engine damage if metal debris enters the cylinders. Replacement turbos are expensive and installation requires specialist knowledge. The car remains driveable but with severely reduced performance and fuel economy.

What to check

During a test drive, check for hesitation, lack of power or unusual whining from the turbo area. Watch for blue or white smoke from the exhaust under hard acceleration. Check the oil condition and service history — turbos rely on clean oil.

The Peugeot 206 has some well-documented weak points, including 1 safety-critical issue that demand careful checking. The right example, properly maintained, can still be a sound purchase — but cutting corners on the pre-purchase inspection is not advisable. 2003-2006 models are the sweet spot: early production gremlins resolved, parts still readily available, and most recall work will have been completed. The 1.4 HDi diesel is the most economical, while the 1.4 petrol offers the best balance of performance and insurance cost for younger drivers. The 206 CC (2001-2007) with the 1.6 or 2.0 petrol is fun but check the roof mechanism carefully — hydraulic failures are expensive.
