Week-on-week trend

Net stock grew this week, which is typical for early September as dealers load up ahead of the 76-plate rush. Average asking price held steady at just under £20,000.

Petrol: movers and slow sellers

Petrol makes up 58% of new dealer stock. Here is what is moving fastest and what is sitting.

Volvo XC90£55,20554d
SEAT Arona£13,19242d
VW Up!£6,17140d

Budget petrols are flying. The Kia Rio and Ford Ka are shifting in under four weeks at sub-£7,000. At the other end, Volvo's premium petrols are sitting for two months. The V60 at nearly £49,000 averaged 63 days. If you are in the market for one, you have serious negotiating room.

Buyer tip

Any car that has been on a dealer's forecourt for 40+ days is costing them money. They are paying interest on stock finance and losing forecourt space. Check the market value and offer below asking. They will listen.

Diesel: movers and slow sellers

Diesel is 28% of new stock. Commercial vehicles dominate both ends of the table.

Citroen Dispatch£11,57244d
Ford Transit Custom£13,79443d
VW Passat£6,42042d

The diesel MINI Countryman is the surprise fast mover at 24 days. The Dacia Duster continues to prove that simple, cheap diesel SUVs are still in demand. On the slow side, the Range Rover Sport diesel at £21,000 is sitting for 50 days. Running costs and reliability concerns are keeping buyers away.

Electric: movers and slow sellers

Electric is 11% of new stock but the fastest-growing segment. The speed gap between models is huge.

Fastest EV sellers
ModelAvg priceAvg days
Hyundai Kona Electric£17,33216d
VW ID.4£16,32120d
Tesla Model 3£17,43824d

Volvo EX60£65,66163d
Volvo EC40£49,04456d
Polestar 2£29,20451d
Nissan Ariya£23,57049d

The Hyundai Kona Electric is the fastest-selling car in the entire market this week at just 16 days. At £17,332, it hits the sweet spot of affordable EV with decent range. The Renault Zoe at under £8,000 is the cheapest usable EV on a dealer forecourt and is shifting in under four weeks.

At the slow end, Volvo's premium EVs are sitting for months. The ES90 at £68,614 averaged 79 days. These are expensive cars that depreciate fast. If you want one, patience will save you thousands.

EV buyer tip

Used EVs under £20,000 are selling faster than almost anything else on the market. But battery health varies hugely between individual cars. Always ask for the battery health report and run a full history check before committing.
