Porsche dealer service records are stored digitally and can be checked online by entering the car's registration number. The check pulls records directly from Porsche's franchised dealer network, showing every service visit, the mileage at the time, and what work was carried out. On newer Porsches, these records include PIWIS diagnostic data from the dealer's diagnostic system. The check costs £6.99 with a full refund if no dealer records are found.

Porsche service history: key facts

What does a Porsche service history check show?

For each Porsche dealer visit, you will see the date, recorded mileage, the name of the servicing dealer, and what work was carried out. On newer Porsches, the records also include PIWIS diagnostic data from the Porsche Integrated Workshop Information System, giving a detailed picture of the car's condition at each visit.

The mileage from each service is plotted alongside the car's MOT history on a timeline chart. This makes it straightforward to spot any mileage inconsistencies. If a Porsche was recorded at 45,000 miles at a dealer service and then 38,000 miles at an MOT three months later, the chart flags it.

How often should a Porsche be serviced?

Porsche uses fixed service intervals. A minor service covering oil, filter and a general inspection is due every 12 months or 10,000 miles, whichever comes first. A major service, which is a more comprehensive inspection with additional component replacements, is due every 24 months or 20,000 miles.

Older air-cooled models such as the classic 911, 964 and 993 are typically serviced annually regardless of mileage. On the water-cooled side, Cayman and Boxster flat-six engines need regular oil changes. Early models (986 and 987.1) are particularly sensitive because of the well-documented IMS bearing issue, where insufficient lubrication can cause catastrophic engine failure. The 911 Turbo and GT3 may have additional service requirements due to their higher performance components.

When checking Porsche service records, look for services that align with these intervals. Gaps of more than 12 months between oil services are a concern on any Porsche, but especially on the flat-six engines where oil quality is critical to engine longevity.

Does Porsche independent servicing void the warranty?

No. Under the Consumer Rights Act 2015 and UK competition law, Porsche cannot void your warranty for using an independent garage. The independent must use parts that meet Porsche's specification and follow the correct service schedule. There are Porsche Approved independent specialists across the UK, and many Porsche owners use them once the manufacturer warranty expires.

The catch is that independent services will not appear in Porsche's digital dealer records, even if the garage is a Porsche Approved independent specialist. If the records show regular Porsche Centre servicing that stops at three or four years old, it likely means the owner switched to an independent. That is not the same as the car not being serviced. But it does mean you need to ask the seller for invoices or stamps covering those later years.

Why does Porsche service history matter for resale?

Porsche service history has the biggest impact on value of any mainstream brand. Across the 911, Cayman, Boxster, Cayenne and Macan range, buyers expect full Porsche Centre history. A Porsche with full dealer stamps typically sells for 15-25% more than the same car with gaps or incomplete records.

On a £50,000 911, that is £7,500 to £12,500. The effect is even more pronounced on performance models. A GT3, GT4 or Turbo S with full Porsche history is essentially mandatory for top money. Buyers of these cars are knowledgeable, they know exactly what maintenance is required, and they will not pay a premium without proof it was done at a Porsche Centre.

How much does missing service history cost on a Porsche?

Missing service history on a Porsche typically reduces the value by 15-25%. On higher-value models, the absolute cost is significant. A £40,000 Cayman GTS with no service records could lose £6,000 to £10,000 compared to an identical car with full Porsche Centre history.

There are also serious practical risks. Early Boxster and Cayman models (986, 987.1) are susceptible to IMS bearing failure if oil changes are neglected. The 997.1 generation 911 has a known bore scoring issue linked to insufficient lubrication. Cayenne models can suffer from coolant pipe failures that lead to overheating and engine damage. Without service records confirming regular maintenance, buyers rightly assume the worst. On a Porsche, the cost of assumed neglect is higher than almost any other brand.
