The angle gear (also called bevel gear) transfers power from the front differential to the rear driveshaft on all-wheel-drive V70 models. The unit contains its own oil supply and is located under the car near the front subframe. Bearing failure within the angle gear causes complete loss of rear-wheel drive, loud grinding noises, and potential seizure that can damage the front differential. High mileage examples are particularly susceptible, and the unit cannot be economically rebuilt - replacement is the only viable repair.
Complete failure results in rear-wheel-drive loss and potential damage to the front differential if the angle gear seizes. The car remains drivable in front-wheel-drive mode but handling characteristics change significantly. Replacement costs £800-£2,000 including labour.
Listen for whining from the rear on deceleration and a clunk when changing direction — both signs of differential wear. Check for oil leaks around the differential housing. On performance cars, ask about limited-slip differential service history.
The Positive Crankcase Ventilation (PCV) system on Mk2 5-cylinder turbocharged engines suffers from design flaws that cause excessive oil consumption and contamination of the intake system. The PCV valve and associated pipework allow oil vapour to be drawn into the turbocharger and intercooler, leading to blue smoke, oil loss, and reduced performance. Volvo issued Technical Service Bulletin TJ-31051-2008 acknowledging the problem and updating the PCV design. Failed systems can consume 1-2 litres of oil per 1000 miles.
Continued oil loss can lead to engine damage from inadequate lubrication. Oil contamination in the turbocharger and intercooler reduces performance and may cause turbo failure. Complete PCV system replacement is required, along with cleaning of contaminated intake components.
Check the oil level before the engine is started. Ask the seller how often they top up the oil between services. After a test drive, check the level again and look behind the car for blue or grey exhaust smoke under acceleration.
The Diesel Particulate Filter (DPF) on Mk3 diesel engines requires regular high-temperature regeneration to burn off accumulated soot particles. Cars used primarily for short journeys or stop-start driving cannot reach the temperatures needed for automatic regeneration, causing the DPF to clog with soot. This triggers warning lights, reduces power, and eventually requires expensive replacement or professional cleaning. The 1.6D DRIVe engine is particularly susceptible due to its lower operating temperatures.
Completely blocked DPF causes the car to enter limp mode with severely reduced power and may prevent starting. Professional cleaning costs £200-£500 while replacement costs £1,000-£2,000. Continued driving with a blocked DPF can damage other engine components.
Ask about the car's typical usage — short urban journeys prevent DPF regeneration. Check for DPF warning lights and ask about any previous regeneration issues. A forced regeneration at a garage costs far less than a DPF replacement.
