HDi diesel engines from 2003 onwards are fitted with a diesel particulate filter (DPF) that captures soot particles during normal driving. The system requires regular high-temperature regeneration cycles to burn off accumulated soot, typically achieved during motorway driving. Urban driving patterns prevent proper regeneration, causing the DPF to become blocked with carbonised deposits. This leads to dramatic increases in exhaust smoke opacity, power loss, and eventually prevents the car from passing the MOT emissions test.

A completely blocked DPF requires professional forced regeneration (£150-250) or replacement (£800-1500 plus fitting). The car will fail the MOT emissions test and may enter limp mode with severely restricted performance. Continued driving with a blocked DPF can damage the turbocharger due to excessive back pressure.
