Timing chain failure

The EP6DT 1.6 THP turbocharged engine suffers from premature timing chain stretch and tensioner failure. The chain system is undersized for the forces generated by the turbocharged application, causing the chain to stretch beyond the tensioner's ability to compensate. When the chain jumps timing, it typically causes valve-to-piston contact due to the interference design, destroying the engine beyond economical repair. This issue affects all THP variants and was never fully resolved during production.

Complete timing chain failure results in catastrophic engine damage requiring full engine rebuild or replacement. Repair costs typically exceed £3,000-5,000, often more than the vehicle's value. The car becomes immediately undriveable and unsafe to operate once the chain fails.

Timing chain tensioner

The EP6 naturally aspirated 1.6-litre engine uses a hydraulic timing chain tensioner that fails prematurely, allowing the timing chain to develop slack and potentially jump timing. The tensioner's internal spring mechanism weakens over time, particularly when oil change intervals are extended beyond 10,000 miles. Unlike the later THP variant, this engine typically provides more warning before catastrophic failure, but the end result is identical - complete engine destruction if the chain jumps.

Electronic parking brake failure
Critical Mk2, Mk3

Electronic parking brake systems fail at exceptionally high rates across all engine variants, with MOT data showing failure rates up to 1597.9 times the national average. The electric motors that operate the brake caliper mechanisms seize or burn out, leaving the parking brake either permanently engaged or completely inoperative. The control module also fails regularly, causing the dashboard warning light to illuminate even when the hardware is functional. This is a safety-critical system failure.

Complete parking brake failure makes the vehicle illegal and unsafe to park on slopes. Seized brakes can cause wheel lockup while driving, creating a serious accident risk. Repair typically requires replacement of electric actuator motors and control modules, costing £800-1,500 per side.

High £400–£800 Mk1, Mk2

All HDi diesel engines are fitted with diesel particulate filters that block frequently when used for short journeys or urban driving. The PSA Group DPF system is particularly sensitive to incomplete regeneration cycles, leading to ash accumulation and complete blockage. Euro 5 and later models with AdBlue injection compound the complexity.

Complete DPF blockage causes the engine to enter limp mode, severely limiting performance and making motorway driving dangerous. DPF replacement costs £800-1500, while professional cleaning may be possible for £200-400 if caught early. Continued driving with a blocked DPF can damage the turbocharger.

What to check
