The 2001 European Car of the Year still turns heads with Walter de Silva's stunning bodywork, but rock-bottom used prices reflect a reputation for expensive maintenance. The 147 occupies a niche for buyers who prioritise style and driving character over reliability, and the rare 3.2 V6 GTA has carved out a separate collector following with values now climbing.

We track 11 known issues across the Alfa Romeo 147 range, including 5 rated as safety-critical. Knowing which variants and configurations to approach with caution can save you from expensive surprises after purchase.

History & Generations

937 (2001–2010) — Petrol options included the 1.6 Twin Spark 105hp, 1.6 Twin Spark 120hp, 2.0 Twin Spark, 3.2 V6 Busso, with 1.9 JTD on the diesel side.

5 Things to Know Before You Buy
1
Timing belt service
Critical £250–£400 All

The Twin Spark petrol engines (1.6 and 2.0) require a timing belt change every 36,000 miles or 3 years, whichever comes first. Age is the critical factor as belts degrade even on low-mileage cars that are not driven regularly. The water pump should be replaced at the same time as a preventive measure. This is an interference engine; belt failure causes catastrophic valve and piston damage.

Belt failure destroys the engine. No warning. Replacement belt, tensioner, and water pump is the standard service. If overdue, the car should not be driven until the belt is replaced.

What to check

Ask when the timing belt was last replaced and at what mileage. If the car is approaching or past the manufacturer's recommended interval without documented replacement, factor the cost into your offer. A snapped belt on an interference engine causes catastrophic damage.

2
Timing belt service
Critical £300–£450 All

The 1.9 JTD diesel engine requires a timing belt change every 60,000 miles or 4 years, whichever comes first. While some guidelines suggest 72,000 miles, Alfa specialists strongly advise the shorter interval. The water pump should be replaced at the same time. This is an interference engine; belt failure causes catastrophic damage.

3
Timing belt service
Critical £400–£600 All

The 3.2 V6 Busso engine requires a timing belt change every 60,000 miles or 4 years, whichever comes first. The water pump should be replaced at the same time. The Busso V6 is an interference engine; belt failure causes catastrophic damage. The V6 belt job is more involved than the Twin Spark due to the engine layout.

Belt failure destroys the engine. The V6 belt replacement is more labour-intensive than the four-cylinder models.

Ask when the timing belt was last replaced and at what mileage. If the car is approaching or past the manufacturer's recommended interval without documented replacement, factor the cost into your offer. A snapped belt on an interference engine causes catastrophic damage.

4
Oil level management — big end bearing risk
Critical £10–£30 All

Twin Spark engines are sensitive to oil level. Running below the minimum mark on the dipstick risks damage to the big end bearings. Oil should be checked regularly and maintained at the correct level. These engines can consume oil, particularly at higher mileages, so a low reading does not necessarily indicate a leak.

Big end bearing failure requires an engine rebuild or replacement. Maintaining correct oil level is the primary preventive measure.

What to check

Listen for any unusual knocking, tapping or rattling from the engine at idle and under load. Check the oil for metal particles or discolouration. On higher-mileage examples, a professional compression test can reveal internal wear before it becomes critical.

5
Floorpan rust
Critical £300–£1,500 All

The 147, along with the 156 and GT, is prone to floorpan corrosion. The affected area spans the entire underside from the front subframe to the rear. There is no correlation between mileage and severity. Surface rust progresses rapidly if untreated. Check for previous underseal repairs.

Advanced floorpan corrosion is a structural failure and an MOT fail. Repair can be uneconomical depending on the extent. Preventive treatment with rust inhibitor can slow progression if caught early.

What to check

Inspect the wheel arches, sills, jacking points and door bottoms carefully. Press gently on sills to check for soft spots. Look underneath for corrosion on structural components. Check the MOT history for corrosion-related advisories or failures.

MOT Weak Points

Based on 17k real DVSA MOT tests, the Alfa Romeo 147 fails more often than average on several items. The biggest outlier is cable, rod or joint insecure at 120x the fleet average, followed by body panel damage (46x).

When viewing a specific car, check its MOT history for recurring advisories in these categories. See the full Alfa Romeo 147 MOT failure breakdown for data at every mileage point.

The Verdict

The Alfa Romeo 147 has some well-documented weak points, including 5 safety-critical issues that demand careful checking. The right example, properly maintained, can still be a sound purchase — but cutting corners on the pre-purchase inspection is not advisable. Post-2005 facelift cars addressed some electrical issues and had improved build quality. For the GTA, all years (2003-2005) are collectible but very late cars with comprehensive service histories command the strongest values. For diesels, the 1.9 JTDm 16v (150hp) from 2005 onwards is the pick.

Before committing, check the car's full MOT history, verify the service record is complete, and if possible arrange a specialist inspection. Enter any registration into our free report to see the complete picture.
