UK used car market: weekly roundup, 4–10 October 2026

4–10 October 2026  ·  GetCarWise Market Pulse  ·  3 min read

Like for like, used car asking prices were essentially flat this week — up 0.15%, within the margin of error — while the median rose 1.3% to £13,170 as the mix shifted toward younger, pricier stock.

The gap between the two numbers tells a story. The like-for-like index compares the same type of car in both weeks, stripping out changes in what’s on sale. The median doesn’t. When the median moves more than the index, it means the mix changed: this week, three–to–four-year-olds rose 0.6 points while cars over ten years old fell 0.9. That fits with September’s strong new car sales — part-exchanges from those deals are starting to reach dealer forecourts, nudging stock younger and pushing the median up without prices themselves moving much.

About this data

GetCarWise tracks asking prices of used cars listed by UK dealers, updated daily. It is an indicative snapshot of the dealer retail market, not the whole used car market: private sales, auctions and trade sales are not covered, and asking prices are not transaction prices. We include cars registered from 2000 up to the previous calendar year with 1 to 200,000 miles; excluding current-year registrations removes most new and pre-registered stock. The like-for-like price index compares cars of the same make, model, age, mileage, fuel and gearbox, so it measures price movement rather than changes in the mix of cars on sale. Week-on-week comparisons use only dealers tracked in both weeks, so changes reflect the market rather than which dealers happened to be crawled. Figures are shown as percentages and medians rather than stock counts.
